Why We Light the Hill: Christmas at Mustard Seed Hill is a Tradition Built for Community
There is a moment every Christmas season when a child rounds the corner at Mustard Seed Hill and sees the 30-foot ribbon tree for the first time. Their face changes. A parent reaches for a camera. A grandparent slows down to take it all in. For a few minutes, no one is checking a list or rushing to the next thing.
That moment is why we light the hill.
At Community Ventures, our work has always been about helping communities become places where people can build a life, grow an idea, feel proud of where they live and belong to something larger than themselves. Mustard Seed Hill was created through Community Ventures with that same belief: historic places can be given new purpose, and gathering people together can help renew a community.
Christmas at Mustard Seed Hill brings that purpose to life in a joyful, unmistakably festive way, giving families, friends, neighbors and coworkers a place to slow down together and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas: hope, love, generosity and the birth of Jesus Christ.
The lights are beautiful, but the real magic is when conversations linger, traditions begin, children marvel and people make room for one another.
This year, the celebration returns on select nights from November 27 through December 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. Guests can wander through three glowing acres, take a family photo beneath the ribbon tree, pass through the 32-foot illuminated arch and discover new displays, including glowing holly trees, a grand Christmas bow and a reindeer-and-river scene.
Inside, the historic Allen House and McIntyre Hall will be filled with the Gingerbread Exhibit, where creativity becomes edible architecture. Entries are now open for Kentucky’s 9th Annual Gingerbread House Competition, welcoming everyone from first-time builders and families to professional pastry chefs.
With more than $10,000 in prizes, the competition is serious fun but what we love most is the courage behind every entry. Each one begins with someone deciding, “Let’s try it.”
The Artisans Market adds another kind of wonder. More than 60 Kentucky craftspeople will fill the 4,000-square-foot market with over 200 handmade products. A gift purchased there carries the story of the person who made it. Nearby, Kentucky food vendors, live performers and the warm Holiday Tent create plenty of reasons to stay a little longer.
Guests can also shape the evening around their own traditions. They may bundle up for a narrated Nativity Carriage Ride through historic Millersburg, reserve a private campfire, attend Holiday Tea, enjoy Supper Club or try a seasonal class in wreath-making, cupcake decorating, gracious hospitality, charcuterie or gingerbread.
Special $5 Friday Day Passes on December 4, 11 and 18 offer a quieter daytime way to enjoy the decorated Allen House, Gingerbread Exhibit and Artisans Market.
All of this happens because staff members decorate historic rooms and prepare the grounds. It happens because artists share their gifts, food vendors bring their best recipes, competitors spend hours piping icing and volunteers welcome strangers like neighbors. It happens because sponsors believe this experience matters. It happens because the people of Millersburg open their community to visitors; and because families return, invite friends and make Christmas at Mustard Seed Hill part of their own stories.

General admission is $15, and children ages 7 and younger are free. Groups of 15 or more receive a $13.50 rate at checkout. Through September 15, guests may use the code FIRSTLIGHT for $1.50 off each general admission ticket.
