Berea College

No tuition. Limited means. Unlimited potential.

Berea College, renowned for providing free tuition to every student, continues to lead with innovation and a commitment to affordability. Faced with increasing utility costs, the college sought a solution that aligned with its values of self-reliance and community support. To reduce these expenses while continuing to offer robust scholarship opportunities, Berea built the Lock 12 dam near Ravenna, Kentucky. By generating and selling its own electricity, the college now saves $2 million annually—funds directly reinvested into scholarships for current and future students.

Founded in 1855 as the first integrated college in the South, Berea has offered free tuition since 1892. This groundbreaking institution not only provides a high-quality education but also serves as a model of sustainability and resourcefulness, ensuring that its students continue to thrive both academically and financially.
