Housing Is the Foundation of Economic Development
From May 23 through June 7, Community Ventures is joining NeighborWorks America and nearly 250 network organizations across the country in celebrating NeighborWorks Weeks 2026.
This year’s national theme, “Creating Homes, Building America,” reflects a simple but powerful truth: when people have access to safe, stable, and affordable homes, they have a stronger foundation for everything else in life.

For Community Ventures, that truth is visible across Kentucky.
It is visible when a first-time homebuyer moves from uncertainty to ownership.
It is visible when a family can remain in the school district they chose for their children.
It is visible when an employer can retain workers because those workers can find housing near available jobs.
It is visible when seniors can age in place, when renters become homeowners, when disaster-impacted communities rebuild housing stock, and when neighborhoods gain the stability needed for long-term growth.
NeighborWorks Weeks gives communities across the country a moment to celebrate the local work that makes this kind of progress possible. In Kentucky, Community Ventures is using this national observance to highlight how housing connects directly to economic development, workforce stability, financial resilience, and community strength.
Kentucky’s housing shortage is no longer only a housing issue. It has become an economic challenge affecting families, employers, and entire communities. Kentucky’s statewide housing gap totaled more than 206,000 homes in 2024 and is projected to climb to nearly 287,000 homes within the next five years.
That shortage affects every part of the housing market. Families struggle to find homes they can afford. Workers are priced out of communities where jobs are available. Employers face hiring and retention challenges. Rural communities and urban centers alike feel the strain when housing supply cannot keep pace with local needs.
We approach this challenge through a long-term community development lens. Housing is not separate from economic opportunity. Housing is the infrastructure that makes other forms of progress possible.
A stable home can help a parent stay employed.
A predictable mortgage can help a family plan.
A safe neighborhood can help children remain connected to school.
An attainable home near work can help employers retain essential employees.
A housing investment can help a community strengthen its tax base, support small businesses, and create the conditions for long-term resilience.
Since 1982, Community Ventures has worked across Kentucky to support families, entrepreneurs, and communities through homeownership, lending, education, housing development, business support, and revitalization.
These numbers show what happens when local community development work is sustained over time.
NeighborWorks America’s national theme, “Creating Homes, Building America,” invites each network organization to show how its work expands housing opportunity, strengthens neighborhoods, promotes financial stability, and contributes to broader community well-being. For Community Ventures, that story is especially clear in Kentucky’s housing landscape.
When housing is stable, people are more likely to stay rooted.
When people stay rooted, they are more likely to invest in their communities.
When communities are invested in, local economies become stronger.
NeighborWorks Weeks recognizes the everyday work of building stronger communities through housing, education, partnership, and local leadership. It also gives Kentucky a chance to see the larger impact of work happening close to home.
Community Ventures’ work is not limited to one program, one city, or one type of housing need. Across the Commonwealth, the organization is helping families prepare for homeownership, connecting entrepreneurs to capital, supporting affordable housing development, strengthening rural communities, and helping neighborhoods move toward long-term stability.
During NeighborWorks Weeks 2026, Community Ventures invites Kentuckians to follow along as we share stories, data, and examples of how housing creates the foundation for stronger families, stronger economies, and stronger communities across the Commonwealth.
