FULTON, KY. (June 11, 2024) – During National Homeownership Month, The City of Fulton today issued a proclamation declaring June as Homeownership Month. The City of South Fulton and Fulton County joined the City of Fulton in this celebration. Homeownership Month promotes the benefits of homeownership and acknowledges the ongoing work to provide quality, affordable homeownership opportunities in Fulton.
“We want Kentuckians to be able to unlock their dream of homeownership in Fulton, KY,” said Fulton City Manager Mike Gunn. “June is National Homeownership Month, and we’re raising awareness about our community, where affordability meets Southern charm, and we invite Kentuckians to be a part of our growth and thrive in a friendly and relaxed community.”
In honor of Homeownership Month, the City of Fulton, the City of South Fulton, and Fulton County held a proclamation event at the Pontotoc Center in Fulton, Kentucky on June 10 at 4 p.m.
“Homeownership is vital to the economy of any community and creates community pride, support, and desirable amenities,” said Fulton County Judge Executive Jim Martin. “Housing availability plays a critical role in Fulton County’s ability to market our community to industrial investors. Currently, Fulton County falls far behind the community and country average for homeownership, and we are working hard to increase housing opportunities to increase homeownership in our community.”
Since 2023, the City of Fulton, the City of South Fulton, Fulton County, Fulton County Detention Center, the Fulton-Hickman Counties Economic Development Partnership, and nonprofit Community Ventures have been working to create housing solutions for Fulton.
“Historically, homeownership rates are higher in rural vs. urban areas; however, persistent poverty has prevented many families in Fulton County from achieving that opportunity,” said Mark Welch, president of the Fulton-Hickman Counties Economic Development Partnership.
“Thanks to our partnership with Community Ventures, we are finally reversing that unfortunate reality in dramatic fashion.”
In June 2023, the partners broke ground on the first new home to be built in the City of Fulton in the last sixteen years, which was completed four months later in October. In April 2024, the agencies and organizations teamed up to build two new homes using SIP technology, and in May the partners celebrated the completion of another new home for a first-time homeowner.
“Helping Kentuckians achieve homeownership strengthens families and communities,” said Brenda Weaver, Community Ventures’ President of Lending and Western Kentucky Disaster Recovery. “We are grateful to the dedication of Fulton’s city and county officials for shining a light on the importance of housing solutions by proclaiming June Homeownership Month, and we look forward to continuing to work alongside these partners to help residents become homeowners.”
